Jim, Having become a recent fan of Dan Pink, I must say I've learned that ADD could be a huge blessing in disguise. Typically, it seems that ADD folks are, by and large, right-brained creative types. Good news: Dan Pink's bestseller, "A Whole New Mind," is sub-titled, "Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future." Oprah was so affected by this book that she gave it away as a gift to the entire Stanford graduating class of 2008 and mentioned it in her commencement speech there. ...another great post!

Jim:
This reminded me of a way I take into consideration these kinds of "diversions" from the path of a particular task I was on. It has to do with the ideas of the incredible coincidences that seem to occur in our lives, and acknowledging the importance of allowing this to work as it needs to.

Have you every run into someone when it seemed unlikely that you would, and that spontaneous meeting turned into a good thing? Have you every "just missed" being hit by another car? What if you hadn't gone back in and gotten the thing you forgot? You might have just missed that person you met, or gotten hit by that car that didn't stop at the red light.

I give myself a break about these little diversion because I have found that our lives work on an incredible timing that we can't possibly manage ourselves, and we need to just let them happen without blame because we never know just what all is being worked out in the fine tuning of the timing of our lives.

Here is my favorite example of this. My father was very interested in the star Sirius B, which circles Sirius, the Dog Star, and named his boat "Po Tolo" which is the name the Dogon tribe in Africa named Sirius B, even before it was detectable by our telescopes. After my fathers death, that year on my birthday early in the morning I went to take out the trash, and it was dark with the Orion constellation shining brightly (I use it to find Sirius). As I walked back up the driveway, I pointed at Sirius and said "Po Tolo". At that moment, a shooting star shot though Orions bow, like a perfect arrow flying through the heavens. My jaw dropped, and I stood stunned in awe of that moment. I could never have seen it if I had been a few seconds earlier or later. I think it was a birthday present from my father, but who can prove such things. I only know what my father once said "Timing is everything."

Hi Jim,

I must have some sort of ADD, because the same things happen to me all the time. I don't exactly remember when it became a hardship but I've always thought it was my old age.

As far as getting beat up by others or myself due to my lack of book learning, I honed my skills working with my hands until I got pretty good, which I feel makes up for it, in my mind anyway.
